How to clean black water tank in an RV

Oct. 28 2022 RV Tips By Sophia James

Most Recreational vehicles have two types of holding tanks on board,

  • Black water tank
  • Grey water tank

Although it may seem easy to do but you just can't empty your tanks on be on your merry way. Unpleasant orders are also caused by buildups in the black water tank and also cause potentially disastrous blockages. A clean tank helps the tank work better and gives you the best readings possible when it comes to the fullness and contents of your tank. To dump a gray water tank at the dump station is ideal but dumping a black water tank at the dump station is problematic for these reasons,

  • If the process is done properly it is more time-consuming.
  • There is no guarantee that the dump station will contain a hose connection.

Cleaning of the black water tank is done best when you are fully hooked up and also have both sewer and water connections. We should avoid using antifreeze or bleach for cleaning purposes as both of these can dry out rubber seals and eventually damage your sewage system. You should use those cleaning products which do not contain any type of harsh chemicals commonly found in other cleaning substances. These products will also deodorize and helps in removing this stubborn soil and debris while leaving your RV bathroom smelling fresh at the same time.

Cleaning and emptying will only be dependent on how often your bathroom is used and how many people are using it. At least you should always try to deep clean your bathroom after every trip because you also don’t want to store your RV with wastewater in the tanks. If you can’t do that then you must clean your tanks monthly in the summer and after every month in the winter.

Suggestions for cleaning RV black water tank

Before starting the process you are going you need a length of garden hose that is specifically used for cleaning purposes. You should also have a backflow preventer on your hose so that your water does not keep coming back into the freshwater system from the black tank flush. You should dump your tank when your tank is 3 by 4 full. You should also protect yourself from any leaks, drips, and splatters by wearing gloves.

Close the valve of your grey water tank the night before cleaning

Before starting the process make sure that you turn your bathroom fan off. When you are hooked up the valve can stay open. There should be an accumulation of water so that you can clean the silver line after you have dumped the black water tank. Leave the grey water tank closed overnight so that half of the tank is full.

Clean the toilet

Every time you flush your toilet bathroom fan should be off in this process. Don’t forget to use a brush to scrub the area and open the gate valve. In the hole of the toilet, harsh clean Chemicals can ruin the seal. The sale keeps orders from coming up from the tank. After the scrubbing process, flush your toilet many times.

 Connect your hose

To the end of your garden hose, you should connect the anti-back flush valve. Then attach this hose to the sewage line so that you can clean the other end of your freshwater source.

Slowly turning on the water

Do not turn the water fastly but opens the tap slowly.

Pull the black water tank’s valve

Slowly turned the water on that should be on until the existing water is mostly clear.

Close the black water tank valve

Close the valve for only one minute.

Again open the Black water tank valve

After this let the water continue for some time.

Close the valve again

Leave the valve closed until the black water tank fills up. You should watch closely as if the tank fills and don't leave this unattended because the tank can overflow and water can come out of the vent on the top of your RV.

Open the valve when the tank is full as soon as possible

Now the water should come out mostly clear if it's not clear then again follow all the previous steps.

Turn off the water

The remaining water should come out of the tank after that closed the valve.

Open the grey water tank valve again

Let the water drain out of the tank.

Head back inside the RV to the Bathroom

Pour 2 ounces of simple chemicals down the toilet which is then followed by a gallon of water.

After all, these, perform a small test by closing all the windows of your RV. Open the gate valve of your toilet and turn on your bathroom fan there should be no order coming out from the black water tank.
